FVSU Defeats Agnes Scott, Goes to 3-0 for First Time

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcat progress continued Tuesday night with a new milestone. Fort Valley State defeated Agnes Scott, 3-1, and ran its early-season record to 3-0 for the first time in 20 years.

With two home victories to start the year last weekend, FVSU rode the wave and registered its third victory by the same 3-1 margin coming by scores of 25-12, 25-21, 16-25 and 25-11.

After restarting the Wildcat program in the fall of 2003, FVSU had not started a women's volleyball season with three-straight wins…that is until Tuesday night. The program's best campaign of 24-16 in 2006, in fact, started its season at 0-4 before it defeated Clark Atlanta in straight sets.

Outside hitter Hallea Gibbs led the FVSU Tuesday night attack with 11 kills, her third double-digit kill effort in as many games, to go with six digs. Laiani McCullough handed out 20 assists, dug five attacks and had two kills. Sarah Rosario chipped in 11 digs at libero. Syraih Wint came off the bench for a season-best six service aces.

Rounding out the Wildcat offense, both Brooke Matthews and Michelle Lynch contributed four kills.

As a team, FVSU lined 22 service aces in the four sets.

Madison Stidum led the Scotties (0-4) with eight kills and two aces.

FVSU dominated the play in the first and fourth sets, while it played new combinations all night. Leading 10-4 in the first set, the Wildcats rattled off the next seven tallies and coasted home for the 25-12 win. After it split the middle two sets, FVSU turned a 10-6 into an eventual 20-10 advantage and 25-11 victory to finish the night.

FVSU will try to add another 'W' to its win column on Wednesday night (Sept. 6) in a 6 p.m. road match at Clark Atlanta.
