Panthers Bite Wildcats Wednesday Night

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats found the road to be a rocky one Wednesday night. Clark Atlanta took a bite out of the Fort Valley State women's volleyball team in straight sets, 3-0, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
 
FVSU (3-1/1-1 SIAC East) fell behind early by four points, 6-2, and saw the deficit grow to 13-6. The visitors battled back to within four, 21-17, but saw the Panthers (2-2/1-0 SIAC East) score four of the final five points for the 25-18 opening set. Tied at 3-3 in set number two, Clark Atlanta ran off the next five points and never trailed again despite FVSU pulling to within 11-9 at one point of the 25-15 final. In the third set, the Wildcats scored the first two points and lead by scores of 3-1 and 9-7 early one. A Morgan Gooden service ace gave FVSU the advantage, 11-10, before it led one more time (13-12) before Clark Atlanta closed the match, 25-18.
 
Laiani McCullough handed out 18 set assists to guide FVSU to go with eight digs and an ace. Raven Edwards downed a team-high eight kills, while Hallea Gibbs chipped in six along with four digs. Michelle Lynch added five digs.
 
Halle Mitchell led all hitters with 10 kills for Clark Atlanta.
 
FVSU will have Thursday off before it hosts Benedict College on Friday night (Sept. 8) in a 6 p.m. match.
