SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Wildcats came close to pulling the Friday night road upset. After a tough start, Fort Valley State came on, but it saw host Savannah State edge a 3-1 women's volleyball final tally.

Following the first set (14-25), the Wildcats (4-4/1-3 SIAC East) ran off 10-straight points in set two behind a pair of Raven Edwards kills. The Tigers (4-1/2-1 SIAC East) came back for the last 24-24 tie, but they committed two errors to follow for the visitors to tie the match (26-24).

FVSU held two three-point leads (12-9 and 24-21) of set number three. Trailing 24-21, Savannah State rattled off six of the next seven points to pull ahead in the match with the 27-25 final. Behind 24-22, the Wildcats' Morgan Gooden killed the next point and lined an ace for a 24-24 tie. The Tigers, though, put up the final two points (26-24) to close the match.

Morgan Hebert registered the big all-around night with 16 kills with two errors in 30 attacks for a .467 hit percentage. She also dished out 15 assists and 10 digs for the triple double.

Edwards added 11 kills, three blocks and seven digs. Gooden chipped in eight kills and nine digs, while Jayda Mikell had seven kills and three blocks. Laiani McCullough finished with 20 assists, seven digs and four blocks. Nakaia Berekley and Syraih Wint led the defense with 20 digs (3 assists) and 12 digs (3 aces).

FVSU had the weekend off before it hosts Georgia College on Monday evening (Sept. 18) in a 5 p.m. match.
