Wildcats Battle Hard, But Fall to Bobcats

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats dipped their paws into the court against an area Peach Belt Conference foe Monday evening. Fort Valley State battled hard all match, but fell to Georgia College, 3-0, in women's volleyball.
 
After scoring the match's opening two points, the Wildcats (4-5) saw the tables turn on them as the Bobcats (9-3) answered with a 14-2 run. FVSU chipped away at the deficit until it cut it a single point twice (17-16 and 22-21) before tying the match at 24-24 and 25-25 before Georgia College held on for the 27-25 final.
 
The Bobcats slowly pulled into a comfortable set two advantage to lead 14-9, but the Wildcats came back to within three, 16-13, before a 9-2 finish (25-15).
 
Trailing 17-11 in the third set, the Wildcats kept pushing until they tied the set at 22. Georgia College netted the next two points, before Hallea Gibbs extended the set with a kill to make it 24-23 before the visitors added the match-ending tally, 25-23.
 
Gibbs led all attackers with 15 kills to go with nine digs for FVSU. Laila Hilton chipped in seven kills and two blocks. Morgan Hebert added four kills, eight digs, two assists and an ace, while Nia Mack registered three kills, three digs and a block. Laiani McCullough handed out 26 assists to go with 10 digs, three kills and three aces. Nakaia Berekley dug 14 attacks and Syraih Wint had seven.
 
Abby Infante and Camryn Carlton led the visiting Bobcats with nine kills apiece.
 
FVSU will have three days off before it travel to Albany for the SIAC Crossover event to open the two-day event with matches again LeMoyne-Owen (8 a.m.), Lane College (12 p.m.) and Miles College (6 p.m.) on Friday, Sept. 22.
