Wildcats Best Magicians, Fall Short in Second Pair of Matches

ALBANY, Ga. – It was the most volleyball played in one day for the 2023 Wildcats. Fort Valley State bested LeMoyne-Owen in five sets but came up short by identical 3-1 finals against both Lane College and Miles College in the first day of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover event.

In the morning opener, the Wildcats (5-7) held a 2-1 lead only to see the Magicians send the match into the match-deciding set where FVSU had the final trick, 15-9, to win the match. FVSU claimed the second set to even the match with Lane only to be outlasted in the next two (24-26 and 20-25) for the 3-1 loss. The Wildcats finished the first set strong with two runs for a 25-22 win, but the Golden Bears of Miles had their way in the next three sets for the 3-1 win.

Hallea Gibbs blistered the nets in the morning with 23 kills, .362 hit percentage, 25 digs and three aces. Freshman Brooke Matthews set her new standard in the second contest with 18 kills to go with two assists and an ace. In the late match, Jayda Mikell paced the Wildcats with eight kills, five blocks and a pair of aces.

Following early leads of 4-0 and 11-5, the Wildcats ran a 12-1 edge to 18-11 with the next six tallies off Raven Edwards, Nia Mack and Gibbs kills. A Laiani McCullough ace made it a 23-13 advantage before the 25-14 final.

In the third set, FVSU trailed by four points until McCullough and Mack combined on a block and both had a kill for a 19-17 lead. Tied at 22, Mikell and Gibbs downed winners for the 25-22 win. After the Magicians took set four, the Wildcats went out to a 10-5 and 11-6 leads in the fifth set. Leading 12-9, FVSU finished the match with the final three points.
