Wildcats Face Maroon Tigers for 50th Time on Gridiron

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The renewal of one of the Wildcats' longest series will take place this weekend. Fort Valley State heads up I-75 to Atlanta and faces Morehouse College for the 50th time.

With two teams coming off tough results last weekend, one of the two teams of the Wildcats or Maroon Tigers will be able to rebound on Saturday afternoon on the B.T. Harvey Stadium turf.

FVSU vs. Morehouse College – 50th Meeting
     For the first time in six years, FVSU plays in B.T. Harvey Stadium against Morehouse.
     FVSU has claimed victory
in the last two games played in Atlanta of the series – 2018 at 27-22 and 2016 at 24-16. Morehouse's last home win over FVSU came back in the 2014 season by a 24-21 final.

FVSU took the last two meetings in Fort Valley the last two years by a 31-3 score last fall and a 56-28 margin during 2023.

The Maroon Tigers prevailed in the 2021 campaign by a 51-3 score in the game played on Clark Atlanta's field.

FVSU Game 8 Win Four-Straight

The eighth game of the season over the last four seasons have been a success for the Wildcats. FVSU won over Morehouse in 2023 (31-3) before it ran off three in a row against Clark Atlanta in the previous seasons – 2022 (41-21), 2021 (40-7) and 2019 (34-27). The last FVSU loss in the eighth game was against Lenoir-Rhyne by a 30-22 margin in 2018.

Gibbs Looks to Extend Rebound Victories Going

In his third year at the helm, FVSU head coach Shawn Gibbs and his Wildcats have been able to 'right the ship' after a loss each time under his guidance.

It will be the third time in 2024, FVSU aims to have a rebound victory. The Wildcats improved their streak to 7-0 with Gibbs as they defeated the Tigers of Savannah State on Sept. 29 by a 30-0 final.

  • Miles makes the most significant jump, up three spots to No. 4 this week, having won five straight with the win over previous No. 3 Clark Atlanta; CAU dropped to No. 6

  • Tuskegee has won four in a row and reenters the poll at No. 10

FVSU Last Weekend: Bulldogs Prevail over Wildcats

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Wildcats renewed a gridiron series Saturday but they didn't finish on top. South Carolina State prevailed over Fort Valley State in a non-conference football match up, 30-6.

FVSU had a tough offensive day as it made it into South Carolina State territory three times and came away with only a Daniel Gibbs' 39-yard fourth-quarter field goal. The Bulldogs found the endzone two times in the second quarter and rode it to the win.

For the first time since 1964, the two teams met. FVSU drops to 4-3 overall and South Carolina State went to 4-2.

On a more defensive game, the Bulldogs outgained the Wildcats, 245-193 and won the turnover battle, 2-1.

Brandon Marshall led all rushers in the game for FVSU with 132 yards on 27 carries. Dejuan Bell added a 17-yard rush.

Quarterback Kelvin Durham completed only eight of 20 passes for 82 yards. Jamie Hampton pulled in four of those passes for 72 yards, while Za'Tarious Anderson went 17 yards on his one grab.

Defensively, Jaydn Walker led the Wildcats with six tackles, one for a loss. Both Kentrell Lawson and Cedric Hillsman both had four stops with one for a loss. Malik Harp chipped in four tackles, while Adeon Farmer had three tackles, one sack and a tackle for loss. Janorris Robertson registered the other FVSU sack and D.J. Wilson had one tackle for loss. Darnell Stephens picked off one Bulldog pass and had two tackles.
 

Morehouse Last Weekend: ASU Scores Three Times Early, Defeats MHC

ALBANY, Ga – After a scoreless opening eight minutes, Albany State scored three times in the final 7:06 of the first quarter and added a fourth within the first four minutes of the second frame on the way to a 52-6 win over Morehouse College.

The Maroon Tigers put its lone points on the scoreboard with 3:12 left before half on a Scott Miles 26-yard pass to Noah Rhodes. Miles completed 17 of 36 passes for 186 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Jaiden Jones rushed 15 times for 49 yards and Carl Allen caught seven passes for 87 yards.
The Morehouse defense was led by Sean Johnson's nine tackles with a sack, while Caleb Grant had two tackles for loss and six stops.

Wildcats Celebrates 'Senior Day' Against Tigers

The Wildcats return to The Valley for 'Senior Day' next Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2. FVSU welcomes Benedict College in a 1 p.m. kick-off.
