ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats capped another successful gridiron campaign with well-deserved postseason honors. Fort Valley State placed six on the All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Teams announced on Friday morning.
FVSU saw the quartet of running back Brandon Marshall, punt returner Dejuan Bell, offensive lineman Andrew Dorsey and defensive end Adeon Farmer garner First Team acclaim. The Wildcats also put the pair of offensive lineman Jose Gonzalez and tight end Gentry Sparks to the Second Team.
In the top league award winners, Clark Atlanta quarterback David Wright received the Overall Player of the Year, Isaiah Knowles of Albany State the Offensive Player of the Year, and Lashon Young from Miles College is the Defensive Player of the Year. The SIAC's Freshman of the Year is ASU's Tiant Wyche, Newcomer of the Year is Jamir Dismukes of Allen and Sam Shade from Miles picked up the Coach of the Year.
Back to the Wildcats, Marshall led the four First Team honorees as he led the SIAC in rushing yards with 933, rushing yards per game (93.3), rushing touchdowns (11) overall touchdowns (15), points scored (90) and points per game (9.0 ppg), while third in all-purpose yards at 1372 yards (137.2 per game). The two-time SIAC Offensive Player of the Week rushed 212 times for 933 yards with a 4.4-yard per carry average with 11 TDs and 93.3 yd/gm and caught 31 passes for 439 yards with 4 more TDs at a 14.2-yard per catch average. Repeating on the First Team, the grad student rushed for 160 yards against both Edward Waters and Benedict for his season highs and added 132 yards against NCAA DI South Carolina State.
The NCAA DII premier punt returner, Bell, garnered his second All-SIAC First Team at the position after also being selected to the All-Region team last year as well. The grad student from North Augusta, S.C., returned three punts and one kick-off for touchdowns. In 10 games, Bell returned 19 punts for 399 yards for a 21.0-yard per return average with those three for scores. He also ran back 15 kick-offs for 364 yards, including a 95-yard one for a final touchdown. On the FVSU offense, Bell pulled in 26 passes for 467 yards for an 18.0-yard average with three touchdowns. He also rushed the ball six times for another 49 yards.
Clearing the way and providing the time to pass, Dorsey, a sophomore from Atlanta, and Gonzalez, a sophomore from Warner Robins, were part of the SIAC's top line, which for the fourth year in a row had the Conference's top rusher and this year allowed the fewest sacks of 12 in 10 games. This is the first time in recent years for FVSU to have multiple offensive lineman honored with Dorsey on the First Team and Gonzalez on the Second Team.
Despite having the SIAC's top overall defense and one of the best in all of NCAA DII against the run, Farmer was the lone All-SIAC player from the unit. The BlueDeath Defense held its 10 foes to only 269.3 yards of total offense per game and a minimal 52.4 yards rushing per outing, including five SIAC teams to negative yards of eight played. The junior from Lake City, Fla., anchored the Wildcat defensive end crew. He registered 28 tackles, 15 solo, with 8.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. Adeon added nine quarterback hurries and swatted down a pair of passes.
Even though he had a late start to the season, Sparks received Second Team honors at tight end. The redshirt junior from Tallahassee, Fla., caught a pass in each of his seven games played and totaled 11 catches covering 117 yards and five touchdowns. The veteran Wildcat pulled in three passes for 34 yards, all for touchdowns in the final FVSU home contest against Benedict and he pulled in a trio of other passes for 51 yards and his other two scores versus Allen.
