FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats campaign may have started late but their results were golden. Fort Valley State had it way Tuesday night and swept past Wesleyan College, 3-0, and gave new Wildcat head coach Chymaine Guinyard her first women's volleyball program win.
After trailing by two points early on, FVSU turned a one-point deficit into a five point lead and later saw Sarah Rosario lined three-straight aces to finish the opening set, 25-16. The Wildcats scored nine of the final 12 points of set number two capped by a Antonique Coleman kill for a 25-17 final. FVSU posted the first five third set point and started with a 9-1 lead before Nia Mack ended the match in a convincing 25-9 final.
With the opening victory, FVSU wasted no time in giving head coach Guinyard her first victory directing the women's volleyball program.
The Wildcats used strong hitting to pull away in the final two sets. The home team hit .542 with 16 kills in the second set and .483 with 14 kills without an error in the set number three. In the match, FVSU registered a .397 team hit percentage over 73 swings.
Newcomer Benaye Kyle paced the FVSU attack with nine kills, one error in 16 attacks for a .500 hit percentage and an ace. Caytlyn Sanford added six winners with a .313 attack percentage with a block. Coleman hit five kills and had a trio of aces, while Brooke Matthews chipped in five kills. Freshman Dakotah Holmes posted five kills in five attacks with three digs and three aces. Mack finished the front line with three kills and three blocks.
Rosario took care of the backrow with 19 digs to go with four aces. Laiani McCullough handed out 17 assists while she had two aces, four digs and a kill. Jahyra Thomas contributed 15 assists of her own with an ace.
The Wildcats moves on to Friday (Sept. 20) where it begins the two-day SIAC Crossover. FVSU faces Spring Hill College on at 10 a.m. and later in the afternoon at 3 p.m. versus Miles College at Albany State.
