ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats new inside player has the team surging. Fort Valley State's Sayerr Senghore was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday.
The Wildcat forward led FVSU (6-11/5-5 SIAC East) to its second 2-0 week of the season last week and has helped it win four of the past five contests. In the two wins over Savannah State and Benedict College, Senghore averaged 18.0 points and 9.0 rebounds along with an assist, a block and a steal per night.
The Woodinville, Wash., native powered the Wildcats to a 58-54 win over the Tigers of Savannah State on Monday, Jan. 13. Senghore led FVSU with a double-double of 19 points on 8 of 10 shootings, including a 3-pointer, and both free throws to go with 12 rebounds. He also blocked a pair of shots with an assist and a steal.
Last Saturday afternoon (Jan. 18), the junior forward, again, guided the team with 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting, two treys, and six rebounds and one assist in the 65-52 road win over Benedict.
In the first 17 games of the year, Senghore paces FVSU with 12.8 points per game and 8.8 rebounds. He had made 57.1% of his field goals (84 of 147), 11 from long range, and 26 of 32 (.813) from the foul line. Sayerr also has 19 blocked shots, 15 assists and 15 steals.
FVSU returns to action on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Morehouse College.
