ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Fort Valley State University Women's Volleyball (12-3, 8-1 SIAC) swept Claflin University (1-15, 1-6 CIAA) in straight sets, 3-0, on Thursday night.
The Wildcats claimed the opening set 25-21. The turning point came with
Sarah Rosario at the service line as FVSU trailed 14-15. The Wildcats went on an eight-point run, capped by a
Dakotah Holmes kill to secure the set.
FVSU rolled through the second set, 25-12, opening with a 3-0 run behind
Naoma Yancey's serve. Leading 15-10, the Wildcats closed strong on an 11-2 run, sealing the set on a Claflin attack error.
Fort Valley State carried its momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead with Yancey again starting the serving effort. After Claflin pulled within 9-8, the Wildcats answered with an 8-1 surge to extend their lead to 16-9. FVSU outscored the Panthers 9-3 down the stretch, clinching the match on another Claflin miscue.
Benaye Kyle led the offense with nine kills, hitting an impressive .500 on the night. Holmes followed with six kills, while
Imani Stokes added four.
Morgan Hebert paced the attack with 14 assists. Rosario notched four service aces, and Yancey added two.
Defensively, Kyle anchored the back row with a team-high 14 digs, followed by Rosario with eight and Holmes with seven.
Brooke Matthews led the effort at the net with two block assists.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Oct. 17, on the road against Allen University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
