ALBANY, Ga. – Fort Valley State University Women's Volleyball (10-1, 6-0 SIAC) completed a thrilling five-set comeback on the road at Albany State University (7-9, 6-1 SIAC) Friday evening.
The Golden Rams took control early, claiming the first set 25-15. A key nine-point run at 17-15 ASU broke the set open and gave Albany State the early advantage.
Albany State extended its lead with a 25-21 win in set two. The Golden Rams pulled away at 10-9, outscoring FVSU 8-1 to secure the set and move ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Wildcats kept their hopes alive with a 25-21 victory in set three. FVSU went on a pair of four-point runs, first at 8-9 with
Benaye Kyle serving to take an 11-9 lead, then again at 13-12 with Kyle still at the line. A
Dakotah Holmes kill capped the set to keep Fort Valley State in the match.
The momentum continued in set four, as the Wildcats took another 25-21 win. FVSU broke away from a tight 15-14 lead with an 8-1 run to make it 22-15. The set closed on a Holmes kill and a Golden Rams error, forcing a decisive fifth set.
Fort Valley State dominated the final frame, taking the fifth set 15-7. The Wildcats closed strong, outscoring Albany State 7-1 to complete the comeback, sealing the win on an
Imani Stokes kill.
Kyle led the Wildcats offensively with 19 kills, while Holmes followed closely with 16. Both recorded double-doubles, Kyle with 11 digs and Holmes with 10. Stokes added seven kills, while
Morgan Hebert tallied a double-double of her own, dishing out 30 assists and collecting 10 digs. Holmes and Hebert also each notched two service aces.
Defensively,
Naoma Yancey anchored the back row with 13 digs. Kyle added 11, and Holmes and Hebert contributed 10 apiece. At the net, Brook Matthews and
Caytlyn Sanford each posted one solo block and four block assists, while Hebert added three block assists.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 7, traveling to face Georgia College & State University. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
