Wildcats Take Straight Sets Win, Sweep Series with Lions

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats returned to the home court and action after a week off successfully Wednesday evening. Fort Valley State took a straight-sets victory with a big nine-point run in the final set for the 3-0 win over Emmanuel College in men's volleyball.

After trailing by as many as five points three times, Jaxon Hicks downed four kills as part of a 9-1 FVSU opening set surge for a 19-16 lead. Isaiah Fedd added a pair of winners for the 25-20 first win.

The Wildcats turned an 11-9 deficit into their advantage with three points in a row and ended set number two with the final four points of the 25-18 final.

Leading 6-5 early in the third set, Oshane Farquharson laced two pairs of service aces as part of FVSU's 9-point run for a 15-5 cushion. The home team held Emmanuel off from there and a second 25-18 final.

For the night, FVSU (3-7) completed the series sweep against Emmanuel (1-10) after winning in Franklin Springs, Ga., by the same 3-0 score on Jan. 24.

In the match, the Wildcats hit a blistering .389 as a team with 36 kills and eight errors in 72 swings. FVSU recorded set hitting percentages of .467, .300 and .364.

Fedd led the FVSU front line with 15 kills and no errors in 20 attacks for a .750 attack percentage with five digs and an assist. Hicks was right behind with 11 kills, .348 percentage, five digs and an ace.

Farquharson handed out 24 assists to go with four aces, two digs and one kill. Raheem Thomas and Taviian Martin, who had three digs and an ace, chipped in two kills apiece.

Muhammad Mbaye hit .667 with four kills, an ace and a block. Kevin Charles pounded on kill.

Constantine Ononye dug seven attacks on the back row.

FVSU returns to action on Thursday night, Feb. 13, in a 6 p.m. first serve against Catawba College.
