COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wildcats continued their winning ways in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Thursday evening. Fort Valley State defeated Benedict College for the second time in five days, both by 3-0 sweeps, on the men's volleyball court.
Benedict put the match's first three points on the board, but FVSU quickly tied it up at 3-3 and then Jaxon Hicks downed a trio of kills for an 11-7 lead. Isaiah Fedd pushed the margin up to five, 16-11, before he killed the final point (25-19) of set one. Rashaun Wright helped the visitors run off six points in a row for an 11-5 lead before Fedd killed the final point again, 25-20, in the second set. FVSU wrapped up the night as it scored the first point and never trailed while Khairi Mitchell served up an ace ending the match, 25-19.
With the victory, FVSU edged closer to evening out its record as it improved to 6-8 and now 2-0 in the SIAC.
As a team, the Wildcats hit a solid .386 on the night with 46 kills in 83 attacks. FVSU recorded set hitting percentages of .406, .364 and .379.
Hicks led the FVSU frontline with 11 kills, hit .421, dug six balls and lined an ace. Fedd contributed 13 winners at a .409 rate with four digs.
Oshane Farquharson and Jose Gallardo combined for 38 assists. Farquharson had 21 of them with two blocks and five digs, while Gallardo had the other 17 assists and one kill.
Raheem Thomas hit seven kills and served an ace. Muhammad Mbaye registered four kills, three aces and a block while Taviian Martin had five kills, an ace and one block.
Marty Boyd slammed a pair of kills, while Constantine Ononye dug four attacks.
FVSU will have a week off before it hosts a tri match on Saturday, March 8. FVSU faces Morehouse College at 12 p.m. and then plays Lewis University in the third match starting at 7 p.m.
