HOOVER, Ala.- Fort Valley State University softball snagged two big wins in the final day of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Crossover, Thursday. They started the day with an 8-1 win over Kentucky State University and finished the tournament with an 8-0 win over LeMoyne-Owen College.
The first contest of the day was a pitchers duel through four innings with both teams plating a single run. FVSU took an early lead in the first inning as
Jennifer Ramirez put the ball in play forcing a Throrobred error which scored a run. KSU tied the game at one apiece in the fourth inning with a solo home run. The Wildcats jumped in front in the fifth inning with a two-RBI double from
Taylor Watson to make it 3-1. A three-run sixth increased the lead starting with a
Laila Leverett ball in play that forced a miscue for a run to score. Watson nabbed two more RBI in the contest on an outfield single, making it 6-1. Two more runs in the seventh secured the comfortable win for Fort Valley. An RBI ground out from
Leah Leonard brought the first run in followed by an RBI single from
Jasmin Stewart.
Watson led the offense going a perfect 2-for-2 in the contest with three RBI and a two-base knock. Stewart had a stellar 3-for-5 outing which included a run scored and an RBI.
Tenison Myricks got the start in the circle tossing two innings allowing zero runs on zero hits. Watson came in relief tossing the final five innings securing the win. She recorded only one run scored on three hits.
Fort Valley capped off their Crossover appearance with an 8-0 shutout against LeMoyne-Owen. The Wildcats scored often first coming in the second inning off the bat of
Alexia Scott. She rifled a double up the middle to grab the 1-0 lead. Stewart made it 2-0 in the third with a triple blasted to centerfield. The two runs in the sixth came across on a Leonard single to double the score, 4-0. The run-rule walk-off runs found their way around in a multitude of ways.
Zoe Molina pushed the first one around on an RBI ground out.
Zayla Skakel plated one on an error by the Magicians shortstop.
Riley Youngblood walked it off with a pinch hit two-RBI double to left field.
Marley Bell had a perfect 2-for-2 contest scoring every time she reached base. Youngblood was perfect in her single at bat with two RBI and a double. Scott rounded out the offensive leaders with a 2-for-3 outing including a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Gabrielle Stonecypher got the start and the win in the circle throwing five innings allowing zero runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Watson picked up her second relief outing of the day throwing the last inning with no runs scoring on a single hit.
The Wildcats are back in action on Tuesday, March 18 on the road at Georgia Southwestern State University for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
