AMERICUS, Ga.- Fort Valley State University softball took two tough road losses to Georgia Southwestern State University, 12-6 and 9-6.
The first contest was offense heavy on both sides as GSW plated 12 runs on eight hits and Fort Valley scored six runs one seven hits. The Wildcats struck first in the visiting half of the first inning on a wild pitch. The Hurricanes countered with a five run bottom half of the frame. FVSU put a dent in the lead in the third and fourth innings plating three runs through two innings.
Alexia Scott plated the first run on a sacrifice fly to center. A stolen base attempt forced a Hurricane miscue and allowed yet another run to score making it 5-3.
Leah Leonard put the ball in play for an RBI groundout. A three run blast in the bottom of the fourth made is 8-4 GSW. FVSU kept battling with a two RBI double in the fifth inning from
Riley Youngblood now 8-6. Georgia Southwestern pushed run nine across in the bottom half to increase the lead 9-6. Three more runs in the sixth solidified the win 12-6.
Tenison Myricks led the offense going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Youngblood led the team in multi-base hits with a double as well as RBI with two.
Myricks got the start and the loss in the circle throwing five winnings with 10 runs scoring on six hits.
Gabrielle Stonecypher closed the game throwing one inning with two runs scoring on two hits.
The second game was closer with a 9-6 score. Georgia Southwestern scored the first six runs of the ball game coming in the first and second innings. Fort Valley chipped into the lead with a sacrifice fly from
Taylor Orr making it 6-1. GSW pushed two more runs around in the first inning to make it 9-1. Through the final three innings the Wildcats scored five runs. Youngblood kicked off the fourth inning scoring on a single up the middle to make it 9-2.
Jasmin Stewart followed with a single to right field making it 9-3. Jennifer Ramierez plated the lone run in the sixth on an RBI single to second base. Stewart tried to rally the cats in the seventh with a two RBI single through the left side.
Stewart went a perfect 4-for-4 in the second contest to lead the offense as well as nabbing three RBI.
Taylor Watson got the start and the loss in the circle throwing the first three innings with nine runs scoring on seven hits. Stonecypher closed the game throwing the last three innings with no runs scoring and only a single hit given up.
The Wildcats return to the Valley this weekend for and SIAC series against Savannah State University. The first games will come in a doubleheader Saturday, March 22 at 1 and 3 p.m.
