Wildcats split series opening doubleheader with Savannah State

FORT VALLEY, Ga.- Fort Valley State University softball (12-16, 9-8 SIAC) took one and dropped on in Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Savannah State University (10-14, 6-8 SIAC). The first game was a 7-0 win for FVSU and the second game was a 9-8 loss. 

Through three innings of play in the first contest, both teams were held scoreless. Come the home half of the fourth inning, the Wildcats plated four runs. Alexia Scott led things off with an RBI single up the middle for the 1-0 lead. Taylor Orr pushed the next two runs around on a two RBI single through the right side. Riley Youngblood capped off the fourth inning scoring with a walk that resulted in a passed ball to plate the fourth run. Three more runs came around in the fifth inning starting with Jasmin Stewart. She blasted a two RBI triple to left centerfield to put the Wildcats up 6-0. Scott added another RBI to her boxscore with a left centerfield single.

Scott was the lone multihit batter for FVSU with a 2-for-3 contest including two RBI and a run scored. Stewart was the lone batter with a multibase hit having a two RBI triple. 

Tenison Myricks got the start and the win in the circle tossing all seven innings with 10 strikeouts in her complete game shutout. She only surrendered five hits.

The second game of the day was an offense heavy contest with 17 runs scoring on 20 hits between both teams.  Savannah State struck first with a sacrifice fly in the first for a 1-0 lead. Scott countered with a two RBI triple to left field in the botton of the frame to bring FVSU in front. A two RBI double for the Tigers in the top of the second gave them the 3-2 lead. SSU would then go on to have a big third inning scoring first on a solo home run. An RBI groundout, a pair of infield singles and a throwing error made it 8-2 going after the top of the third inning. Fort Valley cut into the deficit in the bottom half starting with a double steal from Jennifer Ramiez and Stewart which forced a throwing error by the catcher to push Stewart across. Scott then put the ball in play forcing a Tiger miscue which allowed Ramirez to score making it 8-4. Savannah State pushed their final run around in the fifth inning on an RBI single to left field. The Wildcats tried to claw their way back in the final two innings. Scott plated a run in the sixth inning on fielder's choice which earned her an RBI. Leah Leonard got the scoring started in the seventh with an infield single that allowed to runs to score making it 9-7. Ramirez kept the inning alive and pushed the eighth run around on a single up the middle but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. 

Leonard had an outstanding day at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing scoring two runs and driving in two RBI. Ramirez also had a stellar day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Zoe Molina added a 2-for-3 day. Scott had the only mulibase hit with a triple and she tallied three RBI. 

In the circle for th Wildcats, Gabrielle Stonecypher got the start and loss. She allowed eight runs, three of which were earned, on five hits in three innings. Taylor Watson closed out the game throwing four innings with a lone run scoring on four hits. 

The two sqauds are back in action tomorrow to close out the series with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
