FORT VALLEY, Ga.- Fort Valley State University softball (19-19, 14-9 SIAC) secures series win over Albany State University (20-12, 11-7 SIAC), 9-0 and 5-4 in senior day doubleheader, Saturday afternoon.
FVSU had some senior day mojo jumping in front of the Golden Rams 4-0 in the first inning.
Jasmin Stewart kicked off the scoring with a two base blast down the left field line to plate two runs. Senior
Laila Leverett made it a 3-0 contest with a single to center field.
Tenison Myricks stole second and forced a throwing miscue from the ASU catcher to push
Leah Leonard around to score. Another run came around to score in the third inning on a Stewart single to right field. The Wildcats pushed two more runs around in the third inning.
Avery Thomas drove a double through a gap in centerfield to make it 6-0.
Zayla Skakel plated Thomas on an opposite field single. Stewart kept the hot stick going with an RBI triple to make it 8-0. Leverett capped off the scoring with an infield single to make it 9-0.
Stewart swung a flaming bat with a perfect 3-for-3 day with four RBI and two runs scored including a double and a triple. Skakel and Leverett both went 2-for-3. Skakel had an RBI and a run scored with Leverett having two RBI and a run scored. Myricks capped off the muli-hit batsmen with a 2-for-2 day with a run scored.
Alexia Scott, Thomas and Stewart all had doubles with Stewart adding a triple.
Myricks got the start in the circle with a complete game shutout only allowing three hits through five innings. She also tallied seven strikeout victims.
Fort Valley took the second game 5-4 in eight innings.
Taylor Orr opened the scoring with a deep shot double to right centerfield to make it 1-0 in the second. Orr struck again this time in the fourth inning with a two-RBI single down the left field line. Thomas made it a 4-0 game with an RBI single in the fourth. The Golden Rams rallied in the seventh plating four runs. The Wildcats walked it off on a
Zoe Molina single up the middle in the eighth inning to propel FVSU 5-4 over ASU.
Myricks led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 outing including two runs scored and a double. Leonard went 3-for-4 with a double. Orr rounded out the multi-hit Wildcats going 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run scored and a double.
Gabrielle Stonecypher got the start in the circle for FVSU tossing six and a third innings with four runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits.
Taylor Watson closed the contest throwing the final 1.2 innings. She allowed zero runs on zero hits.
The Wildcats and the Golden Rams close out the series on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m.
