Wildcats tame Tigers in senior night showdown

FORT VALLEY, Ga.- Fort Valley State University men's volleyball (15-9, 11-0 SIAC) took down Edward Waters University (11-12, 10-1 SIAC) in four on Wednesday night senior celebration.

The Wildcats dropped the first conference set of the season 25-23 in set one with EWU. They swept through the remaining sets 25-14, 25-14 and 25-15.

Minus a four-point Tiger run, the first set was tit-for-tat for both teams.

Out for revenge in the second set, FVSU had the hot swings picking up four unanswered points in to kick off the set with senior Jaxon Hicks behind the service line. A little back and forth kept the set within reach for the Tigers until Hicks took to the service line at Fort Valley's 13th point and stayed for five straight points now leading 17-9. The Wildcats secured the set with back-to-back points on EWU errors.

Fort Valley took the lead with the first point of the third set but the points went back and forth. At the Wildcat's 13th point of the set, senior Rashaun Wright was the server for the four-point run with the lead now 16-11. After a couple Edward Waters points, FVSU went on yet another run this time for five points with Taviian Martin serving. A four point run capped off the third set 25-14 with Isaiah Fedd behind the line.

The Wildcats separated themselves from the Tigers in the final set fairly quick with a four point run starting at their second point and Wright serving. Fort Valley had multiple three point runs to give them the advantage in the final set. Two back-to-back point sealed the deal with a 25-15 win.

Fedd led the offensive charge with 16 kills going .667 on the evening. He also tallied four service aces which also led the team. Hicks had a 15 kill outing with a .538 percentage as the second offensive leader. Martin rounded out the double-digit kills with a 10 kill day hitting .529. Senior Jose Gallardo led the setting with 20 assists in his three sets played. Another senior in Oshane Farquharson added 18 through two sets. Senior Jakaris Brown added six.

The Wildcats dominated the net game with 18 blocks on the evening. Wright and Hicks accounted for the two solo blocks. Martin led in block assists with four. Hicks and Wright had the second most with three each. Constantine Ononye and Hicks led the dig effort with seven a piece. Fed and Martin had the second most with six each.

The two squads will close out the regular season with a face off at Edward Waters on Saturday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
