Wednesday twin bill falls in favor of Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga.- Fort Valley State University softball (17-19) fell 5-1 and 8-5 to Columbus State University (28-19), Wednesday evening. 

In the first contest Columbus State took the lead with two answered runs in the first and second innings for the 2-0 lead. Leah Leonard chipped into the lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run to center field. CSU went on to plate two more insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take the 5-1 win. 

Leonard was the lone Wildcat to have not only a mult-hit day, but a multi-base hit. She went 2-for-3 with a home run to account for the only FVSU run. 

Tenison Myricks got the start and the loss in the circle throwing six innings with five runs scoring on nine hits. 

13 runs on 21 hits between the two squads accounted for the second contest. The Cougars scoring a run in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth for the early 5-0 lead. Laila Leverett drove a single up the middle to make it 5-1 in the fourth. A three run fifth extended the CSU lead to 8-1 . In the final two innings the Wildcat bats heated up. Zoe Molina drove in the second FVSU run of the game on a left field single in the sixth. Jennifer Ramirez made it 8-3 on a ground out to the pitcher to start the seventh inning rally. Jasmin Stewart cut the deficit in half with an RBI single through the left side. Myricks plated the final Fort Valley run on a single to right field to make it 8-5. 

Zayla Skakel, Stewart and Myricks all had two hits on the day the lead the offense. Skakel went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Stewart went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Myricks went 2-for-4 with an RBI. 

The Wildcats are back in action Saturday, April 12 at 1 and 3 p.m. to host Albany State University for senior day.
