ALBANY, Ga.- Fort Valley State University Women's Volleyball (6-1, 2-0 SIAC) plowed through the first day of the SIAC Crossover picking up back-to-back wins over Miles College (4-5, 0-2 SIAC) and Kentucky State University (1-10, 0-2 SIAC).
The Wildcats opened the morning with a decisive 3-0 sweep over the Golden Bears (25-11, 27-25, 25-21).
FVSU wasted no time in the opening set, jumping out to a 6-0 run with
Sarah Rosario serving. Later, a 7-1 scoring stretch with
Reagan Mann and
Benaye Kyle at the service line pushed the Wildcats ahead.
Jalena Thompson sealed the set with a service ace for the 25-11 victory.
Set two was a battle, as the teams traded points after a 3-3 tie. Rosario delivered another four-point run at the 17th point, and FVSU capitalized on back-to-back Miles errors to secure the 27-25 win.
The third set was all Wildcats, starting with a 7-1 lead behind Thompson's serve.
Danyjah Johnson added a four-point run late in the frame before finishing the match herself with a kill, closing the 25-21 victory.
Dakotah Holmes led the attack with six kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Johnson and
Aryona Johnston chipped in five kills each, while setter
Morgan Hebert directed the offense with 16 assists. Mann added eight assists of her own. Rosario and Thompson were dominant from the service line, each recording six aces.
Defensively, Rosario paced the team with eight digs, while Yancey and Kyle added six each. Brewer led the blocking effort with three block assists, while Hebert added two.
In the evening session, the Wildcats kept the momentum rolling with a straight-set victory over Kentucky State (25-18, 25-22, 25-21).
FVSU controlled the opening set, racing to a 9-3 advantage through the first 12 points. The Wildcats strung together several three-point runs and finished the frame on a kill by
Imani Stokes for a 25-18 win.
The second set saw more resistance from the Thorobreds, but the Wildcats pulled away late with a 7-1 surge at 18-16. A kill from
Caytlyn Sanford sealed the 25-22 decision.
In the final set, FVSU took charge with a four-point run at the seventh point, led by Mann's serve. Back-to-back points at the end closed out the 25-21 set and the match sweep.
Holmes once again sparked the offense with a match-high 12 kills, while Kyle added nine and Stokes tallied seven. Mann fueled the attack with 29 assists and also chipped in four kills.
Defensively, Yancey was outstanding with 18 digs, while Mann added nine. At the net, Stokes and Mann each recorded six block assists, with Stokes also adding a solo block.
