COLUMBUS, Ga- Fort Valley delivered a gritty, hard-fought performance in an extra-inning thriller, outlasting Tuskegee in an 11-inning defensive battle that showcased resilience, clutch hitting, and dominant pitching.
From the opening pitch, both teams were locked in a scoreless duel, with pitching and defense controlling the pace. Fort Valley's ace, Gabby Stonecypher, set the tone early, racking up 13-strikeouts and consistently working out of pressure situations. She kept Tuskegee off balance all game long, stranding runners and shutting down scoring opportunities inning after inning.
Offensively, the Wildcats showed flashes throughout, with key contributions from
Jasmin Stewart,
Zoe Molina, and
Jennifer Ramirez, who each reached base and applied pressure. Stewart stood out on the basepaths and at the plate, while Molina and Ramirez delivered timely hits to keep innings alive.
The game remained deadlocked through regulation and into extras, as both defenses continued to rise to the occasion. Fort Valley's defense was sharp across the board, highlighted by strong plays from
Darianna Sosa and
Marley Quammie, who helped prevent Tuskegee from capitalizing on late opportunities.
Then came the breakthrough.
In the top of the 11th inning, Fort Valley State finally broke through in dramatic fashion.
Megan Blanks sparked the rally with a clutch single, setting the stage for
Jasmin Stewart, who delivered the biggest hit of the game—a go-ahead RBI double to right field that brought Blanks home for the game's first and only run.
With a 1-0 lead, the Wildcats turned back to Stonecypher, who slammed the door in the bottom half of the inning. Despite Tuskegee putting a runner on, she stayed composed, finishing the game with back-to-back strikeouts to secure the shutout victory.
