FVSU Lady Wildcats Claim SIAC All-Sports Award

By: FVSU Office of Sports Information

At their general assembly meeting held today (May 23, 2011) in Atlanta, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced the winner of the 2010-2011 Commissioner's Women's All-Sports Award.  For the first time since the re-establishment of the honor in 2004, the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) won the award.

The prestigious award is presented to a member-school athletics department with the best overall performance in conference play for all sports offered. Separate awards are made for men and women's programs. A scoring system of 10 points for first place or conference titles, seven points for second place, and four points for third place is used to determine the All-Sports Standings for the SIAC 13-member institutions.

The Lady Wildcats captured the award with a total of 38 points after winning after winning conference titles in basketball and softball.  The Lady Wildcats had second place finishes in tennis and track and field and finished third in cross country.

The crowning of the Lady Wildcats with the 2010-2011 All-Sports Award breaks a streak of seven consecutive wins by Albany State University which finished second this year with 27 points.  Clark Atlanta University placed third with 21 points followed by Kentucky State University with 17 points.

According to FVSU Athletics Director Percy Caldwell, “Winning the Commissioner's Women's All-Sports Award confirms our commitment to putting our student-athletes in the best possible position to win.  We are extremely proud of the combined efforts of our women's athletics programs this season and we look forward to continuing this tradition.”
