Wildcats Return to SIAC Softball Championship Tournament

5/1/2019 12:29:00 AM

Full SIAC Tournament Bracket
ALBANY, Ga. – The up-and-coming Wildcats have checked off two big goals in a second double-figure win season and qualifying for the post season. Now, the Fort Valley State aims to add winning
at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament as it makes its first appearance in four years on Thursday afternoon at Albany State's Gordon Complex.

FVSU, the SIAC East 4
th Seed, begins the three-day SIAC Championship Tournament on Thursday afternoon, May 2, in Game 3 against SIAC West top seed Spring Hill (26-19) at 2 p.m. Both teams will meet either Benedict (2E) or Lane College (3W), which plays at noon, with the winners facing off and the losers doing the same on Friday morning.

In the other opening games, Tuskegee (2W) plays Clark Atlanta (3E) at noon and they will be followed by Kentucky State (4W) against Albany State (1E) in the other 2 p.m.
matchup.

For the first time since three-straight double-digit win seasons from 2010-12, the Wildcats repeated the feat in each of second-year head coach Jason Bryant's two years at the
helm with a 16-22 mark in 2019 after going 16-17 last spring.

Bryant's Wildcats will have their work cut out for them in the opener against the highly-touted Badgers. In the SIAC Crossover in mid-March, FVSU went out to a 3-0 lead and had a 4-3 edge after 2.5 innings against Spring Hill. The Badgers plated two in the home third for the lead, before they added two in the fifth and five in the sixth in a late-night affair in tough seeing conditions for the 12-4 final.

Overall, FVSU was only 2-11 against the other five SIAC Tournament field with the two wins coming at Clark Atlanta. The Wildcats were edged by the Dragons of Lane College, 9-7, in the Crossover and played two of three close games at Albany State in the final East Division series.

The Wildcats have six hitters with a
.300 or better average at the plate. Catcher Keteria Loney leads at .348 with a .500 slugging percentage. Ashley Simmons-Blair is third at .330 with a team-best 33 hits and 20 runs. Shakerra Geter has driven in 21 runners to go with a Wildcat-best six doubles, two triples and two homers with a .330 average. Jahara Buggs sits at .333 with the top on-base percentage of .402, six doubles and seven stolen bases in eight attempts.

Kayla Brown paces the FVSU pitchers with an 8-6 record and one save over 87.1 innings and a 3.53 ERA.
