FVSU Picked 2nd in HBCU Softball Pre-Season SIAC East Poll, Phillips & Buggs Named All-Division 2nd Team

1/11/2021 3:58:00 PM

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After leading the Eastern Division in the 2020 CoVid shortened season, the Wildcats
are poised for a full run in 2021. The HBCU Softball Pre-Season Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Eastern Division poll has Fort Valley State picked second, while Wildcats Kayla Phillips and Jaharra Buggs were named to the HBCU Softball All-Division Second Team.

With three wins in the only four SIAC games played, FVSU sat atop the Eastern Division standings at the abrupt season conclusion. Despite losing half of last year's squad to graduation, head coach Jason Bryant continues with his program's rise with a solid young nucleus and talented newcomers making up the 2021 roster. Bryant's Wildcats have not only been picked second in the SIAC Preseason Poll, but they are also rated eighth nationally of HBCU D2 teams according to HBCU Softball.

HBCU Softball has also named both Phillips and Buggs to its D2 All-Second Team heading into the spring. The Wildcat duo will be key cogs in the continued program surge. Phillips will lead FVSU in the circle and also be part of the infield when not pitching, while Buggs will be an anchor of the outfield corps.

Phillips of Stockbridge, Ga., hit .350 in 40 at bats with 14 hits, seven runs, three doubles and seven RBI. She also swiped three bases in three attempts with a .425 slugging percentage and .400 on-base percentage. As a pitcher, the junior went 3-3 over 33.1 innings of work over seven appearances and four complete games and a 5.40 ERA. Phillips fanned 18 batters and walked 15. Kayla was getting hot in the circle when the season ended with a pair of wins over 14 innings, two earned runs and a 1.00 ERA.

Buggs from Rockdale, Ga., was off to a slow start in her first even 2020 games with two hits, three runs and a RBI. The sophomore was coming off a solid first year where she hit .325 over 83 at bats with 27 hits, 16 runs, six doubles, a triple and a home run and 14 RBI. In her first 103 at bats, Buggs carries a .282 average and scored 19 runs.
