Wildcats Open SIAC Tournament Round 2 Tuesday

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After a strong last two weeks of the regular season, the Wildcats will skip the opening round next week. Fort Valley State opens its 2023 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in Round 2 next Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Wildcats (13-15) posted wins in each of their last four games and take the momentum into the Round 2 of the postseason. FVSU enters the 2023 SIAC Tournament as the third seed of the East Division and it will wait to face the winner of the opening contest of the entire tournament between the West No. 6 Spring Hill College and East No. 7 Edward Waters on Tuesday afternoon starting at 2:30 p.m. in Savannah State's Tiger Arena.

FVSU met its potential opponents three times during the 2022-23 campaign with wins in each one.

Nov. 28, 2022 – at Spring Hill (Boxscore /Full Game Recap)
FVSU 94, Spring Hill 85

Fort Valley State went on a 12-point scoring run midway through the second half and rode it to a 94-85 men's hoops win at Spring Hill College.

Tied at 58 during the 11:23 media timeout, FVSU (3-4/2-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) turned to the combo of Myson Lowe and Khadim Samb, who combined for the contest's next 12 points in only 2:47 for a 70-58 advantage. Spring Hill (2-4/0-2 SIAC West) pulled to within seven points, 79-72, on a three-point play with 4:13 remaining. The Wildcats, though, saw Lowe hit a jumper and Samb add a pair of free throws to answer and take away the victory.
 
Lowe and Samb combined for 44 points on 13 of 21 shooting, six rebounds and eight assists. Lowe knocked down a trio of 3-pointers on six tries, 8 of 13 from the floor overall and 8 for 8 from the foul line for 27 points to go with eight assists and three boards. Samb made 5 of 8 shots and all six of his foul shots for 17 points along with three rebounds.
 
Spring Hill had a dynamic duo of Beril Kabamba and Tana Kopa hit for 28 and 27 points of the team's 85.
 
Jan. 9, 2023 – at Edward Waters (Boxscore /Full Game Recap)
FVSU 70, EWU 63

Fort Valley State built a 16-point second-half lead and went on to take the men's basketball road game over Edward Waters, 70-63.

After a Joe Williams fastbreak dunk made it a 49-38 advantage, FVSU continues the spurt with seven of the next nine points to open a 56-40 lead with 13:13 on a Pierre Mitchell jumper. The Tigers (2-10/2-7 SIAC East) battled back in their home gym to within three points three times – 58-55, 60-57 and 62-59 – with 4:41 remaining. The Wildcats, though, would not relent as JaMarcus Scott sealed the win with a 3-pointer with 16 seconds for the game's final score.
 
Khadim Samb paced the FVSU offense with 16 points on 7 of 11 field goals, including two treys. Myson Lowe added 13 points with a trio of 3-pointers to go with six assists and three boards.
 
Tavares Oliver had top honors for Edward Waters with 19 points.
 
Feb. 18, 2023 – at Fort Valley (Boxscore / Full Game Recap)
FVSU 81, EWU 78
 
Fort Valley State opened the second half with the opening seven points to take the lead and held on in the final minute over Edward Waters, 81-78, in men's basketball.

Trailing 34-32 at intermission, Myson Lowe hit a jumper to tie, Khadim Samb stole the next Tigers possession and found K.J. Doucet for the breakaway slam dunk and the Wildcats never trailed again of the final 18:43. Lowe added a triple following a Jamal Reynolds steal to complete the 7-0 spurt.

The Wildcats (12-15/10-10 SIAC East) saw their lead go to as many as 10 points twice, 60-50 and 62-52, with just over eight minutes left. Edward Waters (5-20/4-16 SIAC East) chipped away and came to within a point, 79-78, with 4.4 seconds left, but Doucet iced the home victory with two free throws with 3.3 ticks showing.
 
FVSU saw five players hit double figures led by Doucet's 22-point day on 7 of 14 from the floor to go with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Lowe was right behind with 19 points, including a trio of treys. Reynolds added 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Samb and lone senior JaMarcus Scott both finished with 10 points on the day.

Adnan Hussein drained four 3-pointers as part of his 17 points to lead the Tigers.


FVSU at 2022 SIAC Tournament
 
FVSU won its first SIAC Tournament game since Feb. 26, 2018 when it prevailed over Kentucky State in the first round, 73-53.
 
The Wildcats run came within 10 seconds of an appearance into the Semifinals against the SIAC West champion Golden Bears of Miles College. Trailing by three points with 10 seconds in regulation, Miles hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime where it scored the first 11 points of the extra period and eventual 65-53 win.
