Hall of Fame
After having a standout prep career at Northside High School in Warner Robins, GA, Holmes, a 1982 graduate, accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Fort Valley State College. While at Fort Valley, Darryl received numerous academic and athletic awards: Dean’s List, Who’s Who, President of the EET Club, 1st Team SIAC All-Conference (3 years), Academic All-Conference (3 years), Commissioned Officer in the US Army Signal Corps (6 years), and an Army ROTC scholarship recipient. He also finished Air War College and is a Black Belt in the Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century.
Mr. Holmes’ athletic career continued after FVSU as he was the only free agent to make the New England Patriots roster in 1987. (1st in 5 years for New England) Holmes led the team in special teams tackles and won the Special Teams MVP in his first two seasons. He played 5 years in the NFL, the majority with the Patriots.
Mr. Holmes returned home and taught and coached at Georgia Military College. (Milledgeville, GA) He coached three future NFL players (Jermaine Smith, Peppi Zellner, and Lorenzo Brunnell).
“Excellence in every endeavor with hard work being the foundation; anything is possible.” is Mr. Holmes advice to others through his past experiences. He is now the Group Change Manager for the Electronics Maintenance Group at Robins Air Force Base.
